Chia seeds for quality Omega-3s
Chia Seeds These little seeds have nothing to do with the Chia Pet, the popular herb planter. Chia seeds are used like flaxseed, to provide omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. In many ways chia seeds are even better than flaxseed. Chia seeds provide higher levels of omega-3’s, they don’t become rancid with age, and they digest well even when eaten whole. They have the same delicious nutty taste as flaxseeds.
Omega-3’s are the good fats that nourish the brain, lower cholesterol, protect against inflammation and ward off heart disease. Cold-water fish is the usual source for omega-3’s in our diet. But, as concerns grow about the presence of toxic heavy metals in fish, alternative plant sources of omega-3’s, like flaxseed and chia seed, will become more important. You’ll be happy to hear that, unlike fish, chia seeds have no cholesterol. Unlike flaxseed, chia seeds can be stored a long time without becoming rancid.
The black and the white chia seeds are both equally nutritious. Jam-packed full of nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, niacin and zinc, as well as lots of fiber, chia seeds offer a wealth of nutrition for the buck. Vegetarians will find them a valuable protein source when fish is not in their diet.
The chia seeds come from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, and have been eaten for thousands of years. Chia was a food staple of the Aztecs and Mayan Indians, and was used to relieve joint pain and skin conditions. Present-day crops are grown in Arizona and Latin America.
Use chia seeds the same way you use flaxseeds. Sprinkle chia seeds on your breakfast cereal, on your yogurt and in your salad. Bake them into muffins and breads. Eat a spoonful of chia seeds as a snack. If you prefer to take a capsule, chia oil is available in capsule form, just like flaxseed oil. You’re going to hear lots more about chia seeds as interest grows.
I’ve been using Mila chia seeds for some 5 months now, and have experienced higher metabolic rate, great energy and metabolism, great elimination, suppler skin, and lost a total of 20 lbs.
